Hello! My name is Dorothy Harton. Although my name does not reveal it, I was born and grew up in Norway. In search for adventure, I came to the States to study after graduating from a Norwegian college-preparatory high school. I chose to study at Tusculum College, located at the base of the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee. After receiving my Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from Tusculum, I continued my studies at University of Wisconsin -Milwaukee where I received my Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology.
Many years and adventures later, I started teaching at Western in 1996 and have enjoyed every minute of it. I teach in the Exercise Science program and coordinate and teach in the Outdoor Leadership program. The Norwegian’s passion for the wilderness and outdoor pursuits is rooted in me, and fortunately I can happily find many outlets here in the Rocky Mountains. I often get out on trips in the wilderness with my students, but I also do many of these activities together with my wonderful husband, my 4 children and our golden retriever, Gomboc. (There is nothing quite like sharing your tent with a wet, tired dog!)

Associate Professor of Exercise Science
I grew up in Cache Valley UT, where I enjoyed hiking, biking, playing sports, skiing and ice skating. I received a BS and MS in Exercise Science with emphasis in Nutrition from Utah State University. Upon completing the grad program at USU, I moved to North Carolina to work at the Duke Diet and Fitness Center as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist. At Duke, I gained valuable experience working with a multi-disciplinary team to help a clinical population to safely achieve healthy weight loss. In 2003, I was hired as a Lecturer in the Physical Education Department at North Carolina State University.
While teaching at NCSU, I completed a second Masters from Eastern Michigan University in Human Nutrition to become a Registered Dietitian which led to the additional responsibility of becoming the Registered Dietitian for the Campus Recreation program at NCSU serving students, faculty and staff.
I came to Western in 2011, where I teach in the Exercise Science program and oversee our Wellness classes. My husband, 2 energetic sons and I are excited to be back West where we can enjoy more frequent hiking trips and being close to our families.
