Course-level Assessment

Individual instructors evaluate student learning within the scope of their courses. These evaluations may include test results or rubric scores. Often, instructors teaching the same course collaborate on appropriate and effective methods of evaluation, which can result in meaningful data to be applied to the program level.

The English department, for example, reached agreement on a rubric used to score research-based essays in ENGL 1010, English Composition I. All ENGL 1010 students submit an electronic copy of their best work. Fifty essays are selected at random, and then names are removed for blind scoring with the departmental rubric. In this way, the English department can see progress from year to year and also can address areas of weakness at the course level.
