The men's Mustangs soccer team enters the 2013 fall season with plenty of momentum from the previous season. 2012 was the best season in the Mustang's history, winning their first Region IX Championship. Western hosted and finished second in the NJCAA West District Tournament and thereby earned the right to play at the NJCAA 2012 National Tournament in Albany, GA. At the 2012 National Tournament the Mustangs won one match and lost another, finishing in 8th place in the nation.

The 2013 Mustangs will have 9 players complete their sophomore season this fall. DJ Searcy from Lehi, UT, will again play for WWCC as a forward or midfielder, Bernie Manuel from Elko, NV, will be another returning forward to bolster the highly touted Mustang attack. Kyle Seljaas from Bountiful, UT, a member of the 2009 WWCC team, returns to Western from his LDS mission in Germany. Kyle plays forward and midfield and was a 1st team Region IX midfielder in 2009. Vitor Nazareth, a midfielder from Laramie, WY, will try to add onto his impressive playing resume. Vitor is a transfer student from LCCC. In high school, Vitor was the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Wyoming. Another member of the 2009 squad rejoining the Mustangs, from South Jordan, UT, and also returning from a 2-year mission in Germany is Phillip Angerhofer. Phillip plays best as a defender but may also see some time in the Mustang midfield. Adrian Sanchez from Kearns, UT, will be back to anchor down the Western defense. Adrian was a 2nd team Region IX defender last season for the Mustangs. Adrian"s right-hand man from last season, Nate "Thor" Pierce from Logan, UT, will also be back to secure the last line for WWCC. Zach Plitt from American Fork, UT, will be back for his sophomore season after his service in the mission field to Cleveland, OH. Zach is a defender and played for the 2010 Mustangs before his mission. Our last sophomore on the 2013 team is Taylor West from Pocatello, ID. Taylor plays goalkeeper and did a good job for the team last season and has shown good growth and maturity.

The new recruits for the Mustangs are players we expect to help out the program from the get go. Up top as forwards we have added; Devian Kurete from Evanston High in Evanston, WY; Rico Mendez from Gooding High in Gooding, ID; and Dallin Taggart from Woods Cross High in North Salt Lake, UT. There is a ton of talent in these young men and we are looking from some individual and team records to fall again this season. The midfield has added Piero Levano from Rock Springs High in Rock Springs, WY; Raul Cavazos from Hunter High in West Valley City, UT; Adrian Montano from Rawlins High in Rawlins, WY; Alejandro Bermudez from Pinedale High in Pinedale, WY; and Brock Mosier from Laramie High in Laramie, WY. We are very pleased with this recruiting class in the midfield and expect them to help our returners to control the possession and the flow of the match. The Mustang's back line has been bolstered by the additions of Chandler Young from Layton High in Layton, UT; Bryant Cox from Moffat County High in Craig, CO; Tyler Trumble from Green River High in Green River, WY; and Chris Clymore from Westlake High in Lehi, UT. These players have proven they were awesome defenders in high school and we know that their skills can be translated to the collegiate level. At goalkeeper the Mustangs added two recruits; Taylor Bell from Davis High in Kaysville, UT; and Eric Walker from Hillcrest High in Salt Lake City, UT. Both players are very reliable keepers and have the skills to be very successful here as Mustangs.

Our returning players and the newcomers to the program have goals and expectations of being a welcome addition to our community and campus, to achieve high marks in the classroom and to compete to win another region title and help us to advance to the 2013 NJCAA tournament in Tyler, TX.
