Module 2: Internet Browsers


You will need to know how to use the basic features of a browser - these include:

  • The ability to enter URLs in the location bar.
  • How to move back and forwards between pages.
  • How to refresh or reload pages.
  • How to use links.
  • How to save bookmarks.
  • How to download files and save them.

The browser that you use is important, and JavaScript and Cookies must be enabled.  You must use Explorer 5.5 or Firefox 3.0(Minimum).  For information about AOL see below or click here.

If you don't have Firefox or Internet Explorer, download a free copy of the latest version by selecting one of the following:

Firefox

SETTING UP YOUR BROWSER

Please follow these instructions to enable your browser for Java, JavaScript and cookies.

Firerfox users:

  1. Open Firefox
  2. From the browser menu select tools>Options
  3. Ensure Enable JavaScript and Enable Java are checked

    Firefox
  4. Click the OK button.

Internet Explorer users:

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. From the browser menu bar select Tools>Internet Options...
  3. In order to enable Java and JavaScript select the Advanced tab
    Internet Explorer
  4. Scroll down the list until you see the subtitle Java
  5. Place a check mark on the Use JRE <applet> box.
  6. Click the Apply button.
  7. In order to enable cookies select the security tab.
  8. Select the Internet icon and set the Security level for this zone to Medium.
  9. Click the Apply button.
  10. Click the OK button.

AOL Users

Although AOL is a good ISP, AOL's built-in browser is not recommended for online courses. If AOL is your ISP, be sure you install and run either Internet Explorer or Firefox. To access your course while using AOL, follow these steps:

  1. Connect to AOL as usual.
  2. Minimize the AOL window.
  3. Open Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.
  4. Type the URL of your online class into location or address bar area.

You can use AOL to send emails when not required otherwise by your instructor.
