Staff

The Mustang Express is always under construction - Join us!

May 2008

If you are interested in joining the staff, come to the staff meeting or talk to Linda Linn, “Mustang Express” advisor. You do not have to be a journalism major to be on the WWCC student newspaper--interested students may try out a variety of different positions, such as reporting, following a regular beat, photography--"student on the street" interviews, op ed, cartoons, layout--the works!

You may also receive one college credit for working on the paper.  Register for COMM 1370 Publication Production.

The college’s student newspaper, Mustang Express, is produced on campus once per month. Through your work on Mustang Express, you can learn and practice every facet of newspaper production, with the exception of running the presses. The paper is produced with state-of-the-art desktop publishing techniques, a particularly valuable skill. Such practical, hands-on training is something prospective employers always notice when sorting through job applications.

As a member of the editorial team, you can develop leadership skills and experience the challenges and satisfaction that comes with responsibility.

Besides all this, it’s a fun and meaningful activity. Students who are involved in activities such as the student newspaper have more fun and get more out of college! Members of Mustang Express staff find that there is plenty of room for creativity. The paper does not have a fixed format. Each year, the students’ own ideas and decisions determine what shape the paper will take.

The quality of Mustang Express has not gone unnoticed. Student writing is frequently cited in regional broadcasts and publications. Over the years, the paper has received dozens of awards for excellence in the annual Rocky Mountain Collegiate Media Association competitions.

Opportunities in the Field of Journalism
WWCC offers a fully transferable, two-year degree program in journalism. The journalism major takes courses such as Introduction to Mass Media, Reporting and News writing, Photography, Graphic Design, Public Relations, and Intro to Human Communications.

Students may earn one credit each semester for work on the student newspaper, and those who participate in the publication of Mustang Express may apply for scholarships as well..

Graduates of WWCC’s journalism program have continued their studies at universities throughout the United States, and have been recipients of many scholastic honors. They have embarked on careers in all areas of journalism and have taken jobs in a number of states. The editor you meet may very well have been on the Mustang Express staff at one time! Many local media businesses draw heavily from the college’s journalism program to replace vacancies.

The Internship Program
Experience means opportunity, and for the most promising journalism majors, this means a chance to participate in the internship program. As soon as you are ready, we will try to place you in an on-the-job situation with a local newspaper, radio, or television station, or with a public relations office. Students with internships not only receive college credit, but also are usually paid for their work. Local employers also regularly hire the best of our journalism majors for part-time, full-time or summer help.

The Conventions
Each spring, journalism students may attend the Wyoming Press Association’s convention in Casper and the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Media Association’s convention held in various locations in the Rocky Mountain area. These conferences offer a range of  workshops and lectures by media professionals, live competitions where student journalists test their skills against each other, and opportunities to mingle and make friends with students and professionals from throughout the west.

Whether you have a strong interest in any of these careers, or whether you are out to discover your interests, you will find the study of  journalism—the art of communication—to be a rewarding experience, one that will serve you well in whatever you choose to do.

The field of journalism offers a wide-range of career options: news writing, editing, broadcasting, free-lance writing, photography, public relations work, advertising, and desktop publishing, to name a few.
