Why Study Exercise Science at Western?

One of a Kind: Few college fitness programs give you the opportunity to learn by DOING as a freshman! Most fitness programs are at universities where you can not get hands-on experience until you are a junior or a senior. Few community colleges have this program and at Western you will learn through practical hands-on application of exercise science principles! Few community colleges have 2 exercise physiologists on their staff. Western does!

Get Hands-On Experience: The WWCC program is unique in that you will learn by DOING. You will work with real people in real life settings such as: recreation centers, the WWCC Wellness Center, the WWCC Weight Room, the local hospital, physical therapy and sports medicine clinics, health clubs, schools, or senior citizen centers.

Earn Fitness Certifications: If you wish to become a certified personal trainer, aerobics instructor, a lifestyle and weight management consultant, or group exercise instructor, the Fitness Leadership and Exercise Physiology courses prepare you to take a national certification exam, such as those offered by the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

Analyze and Develop your own Healthy Lifestyle: Another unique aspect of this program is that you will learn about your own personal health and fitness needs--not just about health and fitness issues for other people. You will learn and practice the following healthy lifestyle behaviors:

  • Analyze your body composition
  • Analyze your diet and change poor eating habits
  • Manage and control your weight
  • Assess your cardiovascular endurance
  • Assess your muscular strength and endurance
  • Assess your flexibility
  • Create your personal exercise program
  • Identify your health risk factors
